Around the World in 80 Sun-Days

I love ice cream! It is one of my most favorite treats, and it is the best of summer treats.  Wherever your travels may take you this summer, make sure to stop by a local ice cream shop; there are treats to be explored and enjoyed! If you happen upon any of these travel destination, check out these yummy, interesting and some times head scratching ice cream flavors.

New Orleans: Jazz in the streets and hot summer treats call for a Meltdown!  Offering flavors like Pineapple Cilantro, Lemon Balm Ginger, Nutella, and Mango-Orange-Vanilla-Avocado, this place takes popsicles to a whole new level.

Denver: The Mile-High City goes the distance with the ice cream at Sweet Action Ice Cream. Flavors include Lemon Ricotta, E.T. (think Reese’s Pieces), Stranahan’s Whiskey Brickle and Peanut Butter Praline.

Hollywood: Dubbed the Celebrity Ice Cream of Choice, Mashti Malone will excite your palette with exotic creamy concoctions like Orange Blosson with Pistachios, Rose Sorbet with Sour Cherry and Creamy Mango.

New York: American ice cream with a Chinese twist is found at The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory.  Flavors include Green Tea, Lychee, Zen Butter, Pumpkin Pie and more.

London: At George’s Portobello Fish Bar there is Fish & Chips, then there is “Fish & Chips.” One version is exactly what you know this famous British fare to be, the other looks just like Fish & Chips, but is actually cod ice cream coated in a vanilla-pepper batter and fried, along with chips made of potato ice cream fries.

Israel: Check out Endomela, which means “Similar to None.” I’m quite sure this is the case. Their outside-the-cone flavors include Lime and Poppy Seed Frozen Yogurt, Wasabi Sorbet, and Cardamom Ice Cream.

South Africa: The gift of an ice cream machine would be the beginnings of Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream.  And from Paul’s creamy dreamy imaginings have come flavors like Roasted Banana and Oreo, White Chocolate and Turkish Delight, and Cream Cheese and Red Velvet.

New Zealand: In the ever-interesting landscape of New Zealand, Tip Top keeps its icy delights just as interesting. The Best Ice Cream in the World, as named by the International Ice Cream Consortium, is their Crammed Jammin’ Cream Donut; cinnamon and vanilla flavored ice cream with raspberry sauces and sugary donut pieces. Too bad I cannot get this air mailed to my door.

Japan: Our American palette may not exactly appreciate the ice cream flavors that can be found in Japan, but they are certainly noteworthy.  In Japan, you will come across, and I am not making this up, flavors such as Shark Fin, Sea Urchin, Fried Oyster, Pickle, Miso Ramen, Eel, and Slow Boiled Egg.  I could go on, but I think I want to head back to New Zealand!

Also, can someone tell me how to become an active member in the International Ice Cream Consortium? I don’t own an ice cream factory, but there is an argument to be made for my ice cream tasting abilities. I’ve had years of experience and really know my way around an ice cream parlor! Where do I sign up?
